Health authorities in Germany have reported 10,810 new Corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. In addition, 294 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours. This is according to figures released by the RKI on Tuesday morning. A week ago, the RKI had recorded 6885 new infections and 90 new deaths within one day. In addition, the figures of the previous week could not yet be comparable with earlier values because of the school vacations. RKI President Lothar Wieler expected more reliable data on the pandemic from the middle of this week.

According to the RKI, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported within seven days was 140.9 nationwide on Tuesday morning. The data reflect the status of the RKI dashboard as of 05.05, subsequent changes or additions by the RKI are possible. The previous day, the RKI reported this seven-day incidence at 136.4; a week ago, it was 123.

The RKI counted 323 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the pandemic began Feb. 3. The actual total is likely to be much higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI gave the number of those recovered as about 2,700,200. The total number of people who died from or with the involvement of a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 78,746.

The nationwide seven-day R-value was 1.09, up from 1.08 the previous day, according to Monday’s RKI situation report. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 109 more people. The R-value has risen further, writes the RKI. The drop in the value observed in the days after Easter could have been due to the temporarily lower number of tests. According to the RKI, the R-value can also only be meaningfully evaluated again in a few days. – source: dpa/picture: pixabay.com
